BCE Principals share their top tips to ensure a stress-free exam season.

From creating a positive study environment at home to preparing a healthy breakfast, these strategies will help your child feel ready to take NAPLAN testing in their stride.

So, what is NAPLAN?

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN test) is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year.

NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national proficiency standards.

Read on to do your homework on how to support your child’s wellbeing and set them up for top marks!

BCE Principals share their top tips for parents this NAPLAN.

1. Create a calm environment

NAPLAN is a point-in-time test. Schools work hard to reduce test anxiety, so reinforce a positive mindset at home. Encourage a relaxed approach and reassure them that their best effort is enough.

2. Be prepared

Help your child feel confident by familiarising them with the types of questions, the NAPLAN online platform, and strategies to respond effectively. Practice tests can build their comfort and reduce uncertainty.

3. Support your child’s wellbeing

Encourage a good night's sleep before the test and a nutritious breakfast to keep their energy levels up!

Why parents don’t need to worry

Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) teachers work to familiarise students with the test format, guiding them through question types and providing the support they need to feel confident and ready.

In the lead-up to the test, teachers provide structured guidance, familiarising students with the question formats, online platform, and effective test-taking strategies.

Schools take a supportive approach, reinforcing that the NAPLAN test is just one measure of a student’s learning, rather than a high-stakes exam.

Beyond academics, BCE teachers also focus on student wellbeing, encouraging a positive mindset and reducing test anxiety.

With this well-rounded preparation, students can approach NAPLAN with confidence, knowing they have the skills and support to do their best.

Parents can rest assured that their child is in good hands.

Parents are encouraged to talk to their child’s classroom teacher about progress in their child’s classroom learning at any stage during their learning journey.
